Men’s Health

Recent studies show that men are increasingly at high risk for health problems such as stress, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, diabetes, depression, addiction and obesity. Men aged 29-44 have a 40 percent higher chance of having a heart attack than women and 190,000 more men than women are diagnosed with a cancer each year. Despite this, men are much less likely to seek help for health problems than women.

Men are often “silent sufferers” of emotional and stress-related disorders but ignoring these problems can lead to a  number of other health problems later on including a weakened immune system, cancer, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, pain, weight loss/gain, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, memory & concentration problems, allergies, substance abuse and more.

One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the acupuncturist will take a full case history before commencing treatment. The treatments will be designed to restore the patients natural balance with a specific points prescription designed to suit each individual patient’s unique needs.   This means that all of the patient’s health concerns can be addressed rather than one specific problem. It is not uncommon for a patient to try acupuncture for one particular problem but during the course of treatment, find that the treatments help in other areas which they had not thought to ask for help with. This is especially true with men who are much more likely to have ignored niggling problems in the past.

With regard to the specific men's Health issue of impotence, the acupuncturist will again take a full case history in order to find the root cause of the problem. Many factors can lead to erectile dysfunction including stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue and drugs (both prescribed and recreational). In Chinese medicine theory, impotence is differentiated into a number of different categories depending on other signs and symptoms the patient may have such as frequency of urination, feelings of heaviness in the legs, low back ache etc. The acupuncturist will then make a points prescription to treat that particular pattern. Some patients do not consider acupuncture for this condition because they fear that the treatment would be painful or embarrassing when in fact the acupuncture points used would be unlikely to be in the area of the problem !

Acupuncture can also be used to boost male fertility. A recent study showed an improvement in quality of male sperm following a course of acupuncture. More details can be found by following the link from the research  page of this website.
